The appreciating rupee and the slowdown in exports in the last few months is making the $125 billion export target a little tough to achieve. With exports logging under 8% growth during February, the task of achieving the target requires a significant jump in March, the closing month of the financial year.
According to official data released on Monday, exports during February 2007 were estimated at $9.7 billion, compared with almost $9 billion during the corresponding period in 2006. The slowdown in exports has pulled down the overall growth rate from as high as 25% till a few months ago to 19.3% during the 11-month period ended February 2007.
The rupee appreciation and the fall in international crude prices also resulted in India’s oil import bill falling after months of high growth. A commerce ministry release estimated oil imports at $4.06 (continue reading…)

It is now a growing debate whether industrial units are serious about controlling pollution in the city. The deadline for registration of electroplating units with the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) formed to run the common effluent treatment plant (CETP) ended on March 31. But of the nearly 530 units, only 70 have registered for the treatment of effluents.
It is common knowledge that electroplating units are highly polluting industries. Talking to Newsline, Joginder Kumar, CEO of the Special Purpose Vehicle, said, “Those industrialists who have not yet registered with us can register even now, by paying Rs 2,500 registration fee as against Rs 2,000 charged earlier. Registration is essential, and later all units can get their effluents treated at the effluent treatment plant to be run by the SPV.†(continue reading…)
