United States To Start Importing Thai Fruits

BANGKOK — After four years of negotiations, Washington has finally agreed to import six varieties of Thai fruits for the first time, beginning from this July 23, a Thai Commerce Ministry spokesman said.

The fruits to be imported are lychees, longans, mangos, mangosteens, pineapples and rambutans.

Quoting spokesman Krisada Piamphongsarn, the Thailand news agency (TNA) reported that the US Agriculture Department’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service had given the green light to import the fruits, which would enable the kingdom to earn an added US$20 million (US$1=RM3.45) annually from fruit exports. Sweden May Import Prices Down 1.0% On Month, Producer Prices Up 0.1%

(RTTNews) – Swedish import prices fell 1.0% on month in May, the Statistics Sweden said Tuesday. Import prices dropped due to fall in crude oil prices. On a yearly basis, import prices gained 1.1%, smaller than 2.0% last month. Meanwhile, producer prices rose 0.1% mainly due to higher prices for basic metals. Producer prices slidŀ.1% in export market and climbed 0.5% in domestic market. Annual growth in producer prices eased to 5.0% from 5.2%. (continue reading…)

German May Import Prices Up 0.6% On Year, Export Prices Rise 1.8%

(RTTNews) – German import prices recorded 0.6% annual growth in May, the Federal Statistical Office said Tuesday. This compares to 0.5% increase in April and 0.9% rise in March. The index, excluding crude oil and mineral products, gained 1.3%. On a monthly basis, import prices climbed 0.3%, smaller than 0.9% last month. World class furniture show at ANP Showroom

ASSOCIATION of Negros Producers (ANP) Marketing Manager Olive Javier invites Negrenses to a furniture exhibit, showcasing Negros-made furniture for export.

The show-exhibit dubbed as “Matahum” will be launched this June 30, Saturday at the Negros Showroom.

Javier said all exhibit items are among the latest furniture designs crafted by small and medium enterprise (SME) furniture groups of the ANP.

Russia’s Inter RAO UES may hold IPO in 2008 – CEO -1

ST. PETERSBURG, June 27 (RIA Novosti) – Inter RAO UES, Russia’s electricity import and export operator, could hold an initial public offering (IPO) in 2008, the head of electricity monopoly Unified Energy System of Russia said Wednesday.

Anatoly Chubais said the strategy of Inter RAO UES provided for the possibility of holding an IPO, but only after some Russian and overseas assets are contributed to the company’s charter capital.

“For this purpose, it is necessary to contribute some Russian and overseas assets to the company’s charter capital, including the Sangtudin-1 hydro power plant, which UES is building in Tajikistan,” Chubais said.

RR alfalfa no threat to organic, export markets

Organic activists and environmental extremist groups would have the public believe that Roundup Ready (glyphosate tolerant) alfalfa is a “threat to organic alfalfa and alfalfa export markets.” Reality says otherwise.

Of the 22 million acres of alfalfa grown in the U.S. last year, USDA estimates that only about 200,000 acres were Roundup Ready — about 0.01 percent of the total.

And the risk of cross pollination in forage production is extremely remote. According to the Univ. California Davis (http://alfalfa.ucdavis.edu, click on “Biotech Alfalfa”), for gene flow to occur from one hay field to another, the following must occur: 1) Fields must flower simultaneously; 2) Pollinators must move between fields; 3) Pollen must fertilize plants; 4) Embryos must turn into seeds: 5) Seed must fall to ground and germinate; 6) Germinating plants must compete with existing alfalfa.
