Microsoft Memo Looks to Ease Staff Concerns on Yahoo Bid

A top Microsoft Corp. executive addressed key points on the company’s bid to buy Yahoo Inc. in an internal memo that appears to be both a message to Yahoo and an attempt to address concerns among Microsoft staff over any deal.

Kevin Johnson, president of Microsoft’s Platforms and Services Division, reiterated the Redmond, Wash., software maker’s reasons behind its unsolicited offer, writing that a combination would provide a “compelling alternative in search and online advertising,” according to a version of the memo posted on Microsoft’s Web site. Mr. Johnson didn’t specifically name Google Inc., the leader in both of those areas and the central target of the proposed Microsoft-Yahoo combination.

U.S. Stocks Rally in Final 30 Minutes, Gain for Week, on Ambac

U.S. stocks rallied in the final 30 minutes of trading, helping the market post its second straight weekly gain, as speculation bond insurer Ambac Financial Group Inc. may be rescued overcame concern bank earnings will falter.

American International Group Inc. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. led the Dow Jones Industrial Average’s 243-point turnaround. Ambac, which guarantees more than $500 billion in debt, climbed the most in three weeks after CNBC reported that the bailout to salvage its AAA credit rating may be announced next week.

“This will cheer us up, if it in fact turns out to be true,” said Bill Stone, who helps oversee $77 billion as chief investment strategist at PNC Wealth Management in Philadelphia. “People are buying into the story.” (continue reading…)

Foreign Investment in Textile Industry

Vietnam’s textile sector lured much less foreign capital than expected after the country joined the World Trade Organization, according to the annual report of the Association of Garment Textile Embroidery-Knitting.

The foreign investors were reluctant to invest in the industry because of concerns about the U.S government’s monitoring program which applies to certain categories of Vietnam’s textile and apparel products, said the report, which was released Thursday.

Foreign investors committed to invest about US$388 million in 76 projects in 2007, he said.

The commitment represents about two percent of Vietnam’s $20.3 billion record foreign direct investment last year.
